Rosebank Mall App

Following refurbishment, the client wanted a solution to help shoppers maximise their experiences in the new environment.

OOTBI was commissioned to build a custom app for one of the largest, upmarket shopping malls situated in Johannesburg, South Africa’s most cosmopolitan urban centre. The mall is home to over 150 retail stores including a world class cinema hall and regularly hosts various events as well as daily and weekly art and craft markets.

Client Challenge / Objectives

After an expansion and refurbishment project, the client wanted to provide shoppers with an easy way to maximise their shopping experiences in the new environment. As the mobile phone is the most pervasive communication and marketing device in South Africa, they wanted a fully functional, custom mall app that worked across both iOS and Android handsets.

The client wanted to ensure that customers were able to find what they are looking for in the mall with ease. It was also important to them that the app provided real time updates on events, promotions and store information.

How OOTBI Helped Client Meet Objectives and Satisfy Customer Needs

The OOTBI team strategised and architected a complete solution for the client. The app that was developed included the following components and functionalities:

A complete directory with each store’s information, updated in real time.


This element included full search functionality, taking the business name, key words and categories into consideration to make it easy for customers to search.

The app included a host of data services including:

  • pulling live information on the latest movies and allowing for movie bookings via the app
  • integration into You Tube to watch movie trailers
  • integration into a CRM service to return current events and exhibitions at the mall in real time

Interactive maps to help users to pin point the location of their favourite stores and give them detailed directions to anywhere they want to go in the mall using geo-location

Using Google maps, users were able to get directions to mall from anywhere in the world using the phone’s GPS or triangulation.

Users were able to share the mall’s events, directory listings and promotions with friends via social media.


OOTBI delivered the project to the client within the specified time-frame and has forged a continued, long term relationship as a result of the project.
